Where do you fall on the spectrum of working "after hours," Reader?

Are you Type A: very strict about not touching work after you walk away for the day, and never on a weekend?

Or are you Type B: no boundaries about when you shut down work which results in you working too much?

As Simon explains in today's video, there's an inherent danger to both extremes ...

Type A tends to be less engaged and more likely to quit. While Type B tends to experience burnout more frequently.

Not surprisingly, the sweet spot somewhere in the middle ... where you do the occasional work at night and on the weekends because you care ... is where people are the happiest and most productive.

Now, when you work at home, that sweet spot can be more difficult to find. But it's also more critical that you do find it.

Or at least be aware that it exists and attempt to find it.

Many people erroneously believe that working from home automatically delivers a sublime work-life balance. But my experience suggests that we who work from home have to be even more diligent about protecting our boundaries and maintaining a healthy balance between work and non-work life.

Just as Simon explains that it's not an effective vacation if it's really just telecommuting from the beach, it's also not effective work-life balance just because you're working from home.

In both cases, it's not just the geography of where you're spending your time, it's about what you're doing while you're there.

Are you being intentional with how you spend your time? Are you balancing productive work time with breaks for rest and rejuvenation? Are you taking the time to sharpen your ax?

The metaphor of sharpening your ax to be more productive isn't a new one. Many experts teach doing so. But are you doing it?

Are you doing it regularly?

For me, sharpening the ax does double duty of improving my productivity AND my work-life balance.

It takes the daily form of taking the dogs for a quick 15-minute walk around the block, 10 minutes of pulling weeds in my garden, a 30-minute swim/float in the pool, or 60 minutes of reading a book during my lunch break.

It also means attending seminars or taking online courses for ongoing learning and inspiration about once a month.

What does it look like for you?

I encourage you to explore different ways to sharpen your ax. Find what works for you. In fact, find several ways that work for you.

I think you'll find that, like me, your productivity AND your work-life balance ... your overall happiness with work and satisfaction in your life ... will be all the better for it.
