Reader, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone that claims reading is a bad thing. Especially not me.

From a very early age, I've loved reading. So videos like the one I'm sharing with you today feel validating in a very personal way.

Science proves that reading, especially reading at bedtime, does the following:

  • Lowers stress
  • Improves cognitive resistance by enhancing memory, mental agility, and imagination
  • Provides a better alternative to mindless scrolling
  • Improves mood with release of dopamine and endorphins
  • Promotes a sense of peace due to immersion in a different reality
  • Increases ability to focus
  • Enriches vocabulary and language skills
  • Cultivates empathy
  • Inspires innovative thinking

Reading at bedtime, for me, also is an emotional connection to the childhood ritual the "bedtime story."

Today's video specifically cites the Journal of Sleep Research in claiming that "6 minutes of reading before bed lowers stress levels by 68%."

Now, as much as I love reading, I'll admit to being skeptical about this. Maybe it's the journalist in me from my past that prompts me to always fact-check. And the truth is that I couldn't validate that research online.

But, while I can't verify that exact number, I can use personal experience to confirm the theory that reading before bed does help lower MY stress levels and helps me sleep better.

For me, reading before bed helps "shut off" my brain from thinking about all the things demanding my attention the next day. It gives me something neutral to occupy my brain ... kind of like a palate cleanser between courses of a meal.

Of course, choosing the right book to read before bed also makes a difference. The video recommends a calming genre, and suggests avoiding action-packed plots, complex storylines, or excessive dialogue.

I'll admit that sometimes I can get so sucked into the world of a book that it is counterproductive and delays my sleep. But at the same time, I can't force myself to read a boring book!

You may have heard the saying: Life is too short to drink bad wine.

It's also true that

Life is too short to read bad books!

At bedtime or other times throughout the day, I hope you read! Read regularly ... and often. For all the benefits listed above, and for the sheer pleasure of it!
